Babar Turns 75

PARIS (Reuters) - Babar the Elephant, a timeless figure in children's literature, turns 75 this year.

Babar was created one evening in 1931 when Cecile de Brunhoff, a piano teacher, told her two small sons the story of an elephant whose mother is killed by hunters and who flees to a town where he learns to dress as a human.

"My brother and I loved the story and we rushed into my father's studio -- he was a painter -- to tell him about it," Laurent de Brunhoff, who was six when his mother made the tale up, told Reuters.

"He drew some images in a big sketch book and he developed the idea. He gave Babar his name, because my mother hadn't given him one," he said.

The boys' father, Jean de Brunhoff, showed the sketches to a relative who worked in magazines. The story was published as a book, becoming an instant success and leading to a series of others, telling how Babar returns home to become king and of his subsequent adventures.

Canadian Citizen Extradited to China Could Be Put to Death

Uzbekistan has extradited a Canadian citizen to China, where he faces a death sentence.

Huseyincan Celil was sentenced to death in China for human rights work.

The 37-year-old was sentenced in absentia for founding a political party to work on behalf of the Uighur people, a minority ethnic group in the Xinjiang province.

A father of six, Celil fled China in the mid-1990s. He came to Canada in 2001 from Turkey as a refugee and became a Canadian citizen.

The Burlington, Ont., resident has been held in an Uzbekistan jail since March. He was arrested in March while trying to renew his visitor's visa in the capital Tashkent.

A spokesperson for Foreign Affairs said the department informed Celil's family of the development on Monday and is trying to confirm where Celil is being held.

Two Timing

I really feel like I owe an apology to my regular readers who check in on a daily basis. Frankly, I'm surprised that there are as many of you left as there are due to my lack of regular posts & interesting content as of late. But I am definitely grateful. The sad fact is... I've been two timing all of you.

In order to try and save Come on Pilgrim from becoming just another smutty celebrity gossip blog. I decided to start my own smutty celebrity gossip blog. Yes, I admit that it's always been a bit of a compulsion/hobby of mine to make fun of celebrities. And what I've found is, it's just so easy to do... needless to say that is why my other blog has been taking up way more of my time than this one.

So my apologies and I hope to get back on track.

And to anyone who is interested in Hollywood cheese, here is a little taste of...

How To Grab a Prize at a Claw Machine

Here is a full-on guide with tips on how to guarantee a grab at the claw machine.

Tip One: These are the standard of most claw machines. They contain trademarked toys, and various stuffed animals. Many of these machines take .50 cents to a $1.00 to operate depending on the size and prizes inside the machine. CAUTION; Many of the managers who operate a claw machine usually pack the animals tightly such as tucking in a bear's leg under other toys thus weighing it down so that if a perfect claw drop achieves a good grip point on the bear, it will easily slide off. DO NOT BE DECEIVED BY EASY LOOKING BEARS IN A CORNER ON A MOUNTAIN OF OTHER TOYS.

I Heart Flickr

I love Flickr. I love absolutely everything about Flickr.
So I'm going to start a new weekly Flickr Feature called, you guessed it: I Heart Fickr.

Oh, stop your groaning. I know I'm pretty bad at keeping up my weekly features but give me a break. This one will be easy to post so there will be a much greater chance of me sticking with it.

Boy you guys are a tough crowd.

Anyway, in other Come on Pilgrim news, I have been asked repeatedly why I no longer post the Blender Crossword. I miss it as much as you all do but Blender stopped posting it on their site so it looks like for now we are out of luck.

In Shock

I just read that Kim Gordon from Sonic Youth is 53 years old! I'm in shock right now.

It's funny when you have an idea about how old you think someone is and then you find out that you weren't even close.

My mother is 4 years older than Kim Gordon for Christ Sake!
